We stayed at the sunset inn for two days at the beginning and end of our honeymoon. The staff were helpful and friendly and upgraded us both times (for free) to a bigger suite than we had booked - one even had a jacuzzi bath in it!

The suites were comfortable, well furnished and clean (not to mention huge!) You had everything to suit every traveller - even an office chair and desk if you are away on business.

The hotel is well located next to Davie street (which is the Gay district in Vancouver). There are hundreds of restaurants on Davie Street to suit everyones budget and tastes. Although you are next to Davie Street it is still quiet though. You are also a 25 minute walk from the sea wall and English Bay.

We only have two criticisms of the hotel. The first was the breakfast. As long as you were there at 7 when they first put it in lobby for you to collect you are fine.... if you go much later than this there doesn't seem to be anything left! You do have a selection of cereals, cakes, bread and some orange juice for you to take back to your room to consume. The second criticism are the views from the balcony. They are a bit poor, but thats not the hotels fault! You are surrounded by 70's style buildings which aren't the most attractive thing to look at..... the inside of the rooms make up for the poor views though, so don't let that put you off.

We would definitely stay at this hotel again if we are ever fortunate enough to return to Vancouver.... thank you for helping make us feel so welcome.

Stayed at the hotel for four nights from 27th june,2008 and found it hard to fault (i could be picky and state only one lift was working).Had a suite on the seventh floor with a small balcony and a partial view of the harbour.Suite clean and tidy with adequate amenities.Mention should be made of Hotel Employee Sean who was very helpful and excellant in his choice of restaurants. Of particular note are Takis greek restaurant on nearby Davey Street where its popularity is measured by the fact people queue outside for a table and a Singapore restaurant on the opposite side of Davey Street in the opposite direction.Be warned theportions are huge and two dishes are quite enough for three people - we stupidly ordered starters and three main meals however the efficient staff cheerfully bundled up theremaining food and there was enough left for another mealat the hotel the next day.
Vancouver itself is a clean vibrant city and visitors should doall the usual things.Do not bother with a circular trip on the Skytrain though good value there is not much of interest unless you study suburban homes.
A word of warning do not walk as we did from Gastown to Chinatown unless you have a peculiar affinity for tramps and drug addicts. THE AREA IS CRAWLING WITH THEM WE FELT LIKE EXTRAS IN aGEORGE A ROMERO FILM. Tramps emerged from skips, sidestreets and doss houses like zombies all making for a place called Pigeon Park where they gathered for their prey (methadone and cheap alcohol). The locals do not seem to be bothered by them stating theydo not hassle people which was true and preferring them all to be located in one area rather than their own area.Nevertheless I found their presnce quite threatening and appalling watching at least one drug deal and seeing people root through litter bins for discarded food.

“Terrific hotel, great location”

You can't beat this. This small hotel has 50 suites on 11 floors, each with real balconies, either overlooking English Bay or the cityscape and mountains, all in a great location.

Room was terrific. We booked one of the "executive suites". Nice large bedroom with king size bed, desk and desk chair. Dining room area with 4 ft diameter table and four chairs and a kitchen with full fridge, oven, microwave, coffee percolator, electric tea kettle, teapot, cutlery, pots and pans, etc. In other words, fully equipped.

Bathroom was small but, heh, what do you want to do in a bathroom?

Everything was very clean. I particularly liked the hardwood floors in bedroom and dining area. Would have been nice to have a sitting chair in the bedroom area (our suite was totally open - except bathroom). But no real loss since we spent lots of time reading on the balcony.

Nice staff and did I mention the location? On the edge of downtown in an apartment area. Two blocks from a beach and aqua taxi to Granville Island (don't miss the farmers' market there), 8 blocks to English Bay beach and Stanley Park. we walked a lot. 5 minutes to downtown. 10 minutes to Chinatown or Gastown. 15 minutes to Stanley Park. One block away is Davie Street with, I'm guessing, 30 or 40 restaurants and bakeries. Every cuisine style, all casual. Would you belive a Transylvanian bakery, just one block from hotel, as was a convenience store. Two more blocks away and you've got two fine vegetable and fruit stores.

As you can guess, I highly recommend the Sunset Inn & Suites. Great location, great room and we paid $240 including taxes which was a good price for a downtown hotel.

We stayed in this hotel in early July for the purposes of attending a friend's party.

Location - very good, close to seabus to Granville Island was a plus, love the market and having a kitchen we could buy some great snacks. Easy walk to Stanley Park.

Rooms - Floor was dirty/hairy in all rooms, had not been cleaned and the microwave was covered in fingerprints. We spent $ 220 a night and were sure we were promised and executive with sitting room, but the only place to sit was a small kitchen table, 1 desk chair, the bed or the balcony. Entire 3 night stay was $ 750.00 with taxes- also note local calls being charged at almost long distance rates. Only half renovated, the bathroom tub was small and OLD, and the closets smelled like an old folks home. Windows are not new. Can not turn around in the shared or room hallway, and I would not want to use the elevators in case of emergency - takes forever!!! Forget it if houskeeping has used the one elevator that works. Which brings me to my next point - IN 3 DAYS OUR ROOM WAS NOT CLEANED ONCE. We were told check outs were first - we left our sign out (and left the room all day) for 3 days and someone finally showed up at 5 p.m. on the last day when we did not want to leave our room to have it cleaned, so we got clean towels, but had to live with the yucky floor. View was nice, which is good since we spent a lot of time on the balcony where the only chairs were! Breakfast was GONE by 8 a.m. and not replenished. Customer service was almost snobbish.

SAFETY: Someone was shot in the alley behind the hotel in broad daylight while we were there, apparently gang related. I was told this is not normal for that area, but it was still frightening for the guests who use the alley to the main street or park back there. Be careful, it is Vancouver!

Will not stay next time we are in town, will try something more upscale, but the prices in Vancouver for accomodations is ridiculous for what you get, in my opinion.

We got a one bedroom unit. It was nice, not fancy. Free parking. Complimentary breakfast. The manager was extremely helpful as we arrived very late. Walking distance to grocery shopping, restaurant. Will go again.
