This is an incredibly cozy house on a quaint side-street right outside of Hamilton. The rooms are clean & well-kept, thoughtfully decorated and comfortable. The house itself is filled with charms, island trinkets, antiques, and plenty of sun. You feel right at home as soon as you walk through the front door.
We were very lucky to find a vacancy here, staying in the wonderfully sunny & warm Birds of Paradise room upstairs overlooking the front gate and lush grounds. The expansive south-facing patio is absolutely wonderful for relaxing and enjoying the sun without ever really leaving your room -- you'll want to sprawl there all day. There was also a small table and extra chairs provided, which came in handy for meals in (wine bottle openers are available as well). Other thoughtful amenities are available throughout the house including a pool with complementary towels, common patio with outdoor grill, a guest sink & fridge, a selection of herbal teas and hot chocolate, and a jar of ginger snap cookies for the road. There's also an expansive collection of DVDs, board games,
books, and even a PS2 to keep you occupied in case of bad weather.
Harry & Marlie are sweet hosts, always inquisitive of your schedule and quick to offer tips on where to go and how to get there. Knowing the potential dangers of the road into town after dark (no sidewalks, blind spots everywhere on the windy roads) and offering rides into town, as well as offering restaurant suggestions dependent upon your mood are helpful tips. Breakfasts are pleasant with conversation, with Harry always sitting by the table strumming up chatter, helping to set a nice & easy pace for the day. Unfortunately the breakfast selection is sparse-- fruit salad, cereals, bread, juice, and coffee constitute the majority of your choices and are consistent from day to day. It would've been nice to have hot food options once in a while, but perhaps this was just a customary island breakfast. From time to time conversation can drag and become awkward -- the island's conflicted attitude toward its own cultural make-up and Harry's day-to-day gripes can become awkward & repetitive topics to cover. But the home-roasted organic coffee is fabulous and almost makes it worth it to linger around the kitchen.
Overall we would recommend Kingston House for a cozy home-feel visit to the island.
